Lesson Transcript

Hey guys, welcome back to Turkish white board series.
Today we have another fun topic.
We will learn about Turkish currency,
the lira and the big big large large numbers till
Okay, if you are ready buckle up and let's get started.
Okay, first we will start by learning the vocabulary
and look at the look at the board and don't get frightened.
Okay, I know there are a lot of numbers in here
but before we start I have to tell you that
Turkish numbers are all regular so when you know a couple of things
you just add the numbers and it's easy
there is no irregularity in Turkish numbers so
you already I assume that you already know to count from 1 to 10
bir, iki, üç, dört, beş, altı, yedi, sekiz, dokuz, on
and I will start with ""on"" meaning ten.
Let's see.
on
yirmi
otuz
kirk
elli
altmış
yetmiş
seksen
doksan
yüz
Okay, This is our first set from 10 to 100.
on, yirmi, otuz, kirk, elli, altmış, yetmiş, seksen, doksan, yüz
and I want you to notice something
after yüz till 1000
you just add the numbers 1 2 3 before the number yüz, Okay?
Let's see.
iki yüz
üç yüz
dört yüz
beş yüz
altı yüz
yedi yüz
sekiz yüz
dokuz yüz
Do you see
iki, üç, dört, beş, altı, yedi, sekiz, dokuz,
These are the normal numbers and you add yüz
so, it's very easy okay and after this part.
Now we came to thousands and thousand means 'bin' in Turkish okay?
bin this is thousand okay
let's separate it like this as well okay from
iki yüz to dokuz yüz and then we have 1000 and after this
it's again regular you just add 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 to 1000
So, let's see
iki bin
üç bin
dört bin
beş bin
altı bin
yedi bin
sekiz bin
dokuz bin
See, easy peasy and then we have on bin
because this is on bin
and it's not our topic today but if you want to continue you just add 20 30 40 50
and bin and you make the larger larger numbers okay so it's easy
no irregularity okay let's say it.
One more time.
on
yirmi
otuz
kirk
elli
altmış
yetmiş
seksen
doksan
yüz
iki yüz
üç yüz
dört yüz
beş yüz
altı yüz
yedi yüz
sekiz yüz
dokuz yüz
bin
iki bin
üç bin
dört bin
beş bin
altı bin
yedi bin
sekiz bin
dokuz bin
And on bin very good too much too many numbers
but it's not that difficult I guess okay let's continue
okay let's now continue with our dialogue and learn about the currency in Turkish
Bu kupa kaç para?
How much does this mug cost?
yetmiş lira elli kuruş
It costs seventy lira and fifty kuruş, okay?
Let's see our examples.
Bir lira elli kuruş
It costs one lira fifty kuruş
Beş bin iki yüz kırk sekiz lira
It costs five thousand two hundred forty-eight lira, okay?
you see
When we talk about currencies Turkish currency is lira
and the currency smaller than lira is kuruş
but this is a cultural note I guess it's very bad for us but because of the
high high high rate of inflation in Turkey
now kuruş doesn't mean much of course we still use it
but there is actually nothing to buy using kuruş
because everything is way more expensive
to pay than kuruş it's not like cent in or quarter like USD dollar
okay now let's continue
Let's see our sentence pattern here
actually, our sentence pattern much is much easier than English
because you only say the number you don't even have a full sentence
you say number lira number kuruş that's it
whatever the number is number lira number kuruş
See, Bir lira elli kuruş,
number lira number kuruş
yetmiş lira elli kuruş,
number lira number kuruş
Beş bin iki yüz kırk sekiz lira because we don't have kuruş here
number lira that's it
if you don't have the kuruş you just say number lira that's it
you don't need to say it costs number lira and number kuruş
you don't have this part in Turkish.
Okay, normally we are done,
but before we are done let's continue with this
we have a couple of numbers to you know study together
let's say 31 how do we say it
otuz bir
and you see all our numbers are written separately
otuz bir
this is otuz and you add bir one
seksen üç
iki yüz kırk sekiz
iki yüz kırk sekiz
And, 1530
Bin beş yüz otuz
That's it.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson.
