Lesson focus

Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 47: Being a vegetarian in Turkey.
This lesson is not only for all of the vegetarians out there, but it's also for anyone with an aversion to a particular food! There are many reasons a person won't eat a particular food, and there may be times when communicating this is necessary. In this lesson, we will go over some phrases to make sure you don't get any unwanted surprises on your plate.
In Turkish, "I am a vegetarian" is Ben bir vejeteryanım. Ben bir vejeteryanım. Let's break it down by syllable: Ben bir ve-je-ter-ya-nım. Now, let's hear it once again, Ben bir vejeteryanım.
The first word Ben means "I am." Ben. Once more, Ben. Then, we have Bir, which as you know, means something like "a" or "an" in English. Then we have Vejeteryanım, which means "vegetarian." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time. Ve-je-ter-ya-nım. Vejeteryanım.
To recap here, we have Ben bir vejeteryanım. Ben bir ve-je-ter-ya-nım. Ben bir vejeteryanım.
This means, "I'm a vegetarian."
Another way you can communicate that you don't eat a particular food is by saying just that!
In Turkish, "I don't eat meat" is Ben et yemem. Let's break it down by syllable: Ben et ye-mem. Now, let's hear it once again, Ben et yemem.
The first word Ben means "I" or "I am," as we have just learned. Next, we have Et, which in English is "meat." Et. Et. Last, we have Yemem, which means, "do not eat." Ye-mem. Yemem.
All together, we have Ben et yemem. Literally, this means, "(I) don't eat meat." Ben et ye-mem. Ben et yemem.
We can use this sentence pattern for other kinds of food by simply changing just one word! So, let's look at some other possibilities. Let's try "cheese," which in Turkish is Peynir. Pey-nir. Peynir.
Now, let's try to phrase with this word. "I don't eat cheese" in Turkish is Ben peynir yemem. Let's break it down by syllable: Ben pey-nir ye-mem. Now, let's hear it once more time, Ben peynir yemem.
If you want to make sure some food doesn't have an ingredient you can't or you don't want to eat, you should simply ask about it. For example, if you want to make sure a meal doesn't have meat, you should ask, Bu yemeğin içinde et var mı? "Is there meat inside this food?" Bu ye-me-ğin i-çin-de et var mı? Bu yemeğin içinde et var mı?
The first word Bu means, "this." Bu. Bu. Then you have Yemeğin, which means, "of this food" or "in this food." Ye-me-ğin. Yemeğin. Next, we have Içinde which means "inside." I-çin-de. Içinde. As you can remember, the next word from the sentence above Et means "meat." Finally, we have Var mı which we already know means "is there." Var mı. Var mı.
Let's hear it once more time, Bu ye-me-ğin i-çin-de et var mı? Bu yemeğin içinde et var mı?
