Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 43: Renting a vehicle in Turkey.
In this lesson, we'll introduce you a phrase that will help you get to the places you need to be! In some places, trains and subways are the way to travel, but it's also very useful to know how to rent a car, scooter, or bicycle.
In Turkish, "I would like to rent a car" is Bir araba kiralamak istiyorum. Let's break it down: Bir a-ra-ba ki-ra-la-mak is-ti-yo-rum. Once more, Bir araba kiralamak istiyorum.
The first word, Bir, means "one," and serves as an article like "a" or "an." Bir. Bir. Next comes Araba, which means "car." A-ra-ba. Araba. Then, we have Kiralamak, which means "to rent." Ki-ra-la-mak. Kiralamak. Then, there is a Istiyorum word we have already covered in some previous lessons. It means "I would like to." Is-ti-yo-rum. Istiyorum.
The whole sentence again: Bir a-ra-ba ki-ra-la-mak is-ti-yo-rum. Bir araba kiralamak istiyorum.
"Motorbike" in Turkish is Motorsiklet. Mo-tor-sik-let. Motorsiklet.
Let's use it in our sentence now. Bir motorsiklet kiralamak istiyorum. Bir mo-tor-sik-let ki-ra-la-mak is-ti-yo-rum.
Renting a scooter is not as popular as in some Mediterranean countries, but you might want to try that too. In Turkish, scooter is Mobilet. Mo-bi-let. Mobilet.
Bir mobilet kiralamak istiyorum. Bir mo-bi-let ki-ra-la-mak is-ti-yo-rum.
Again, we have one new word: Mobilet.
Finally, why not rent a bike as well? Bir bisiklet kiralamak istiyorum. Bir bi-sik-let ki-ra-la-mak is-ti-yo-rum.
Bisiklet means "bike" in this sentence. Bi-sik-let. Bisiklet.
If you're renting something, it's also important to know when you must return it. Therefore, we're giving you a phrase you can use to make sure you return it on time.
In Turkish, "When must I return it?" is Ne zaman geri getirmeliyim? Ne za-man ge-ri ge-tir-me-li-yim?
The first phrase, Ne zaman, means "when." Ne za-man. Ne zaman. Next, we have Geri which means "back." Ge-ri. Geri. Then, we have Getirmeliyim, which in English is "I must return." Ge-tir-me-li-yim. Getirmeliyim.
All together, we have Ne za-man ge-ri ge-tir-me-li-yim? Ne zaman geri getirmeliyim? Literally, this means "When must I return it?"
Finally, you may want to return it at a different location. In Turkey, "Can I return it somewhere else?" is Başka bir yere geri getirebilir miyim? Baş-ka bir ye-re ge-ri ge-ti-re-bi-lir mi-yim?
The first word, Başka, means, "another." Baş-ka. Başka. Next, we have Bir, which means "a" or "an." Bir. Bir. Then, we have Yere, which means something like "to location." Ye-re. Yere. We've already seen the second part of this phrase, Geri getirebilir. It means "I can return." If you add Miyim at end of the word, you convert it to question form which is Geri getirebilir miyim, "Can I return." Ge-ri ge-ti-re-bi-lir mi-yim. Geri getirebilir miyim.
The entire sentence again: Baş-ka bir ye-re ge-ri ge-ti-re-bi-lir mi-yim? Başka bir yere geri getirebilir miyim?
The answer should be a big yes and the name of the location. Evet, (location).
If you're unlucky, they'll say Hayır, getiremezsiniz, which literally means "No, you cannot return." Ha-yır, ge-ti-re-mez-si-niz. Hayır, getiremezsiniz.
