Hello! Merhaba! My name is Sarah, and I will be your language teacher and cultural guide throughout this introductory course. |
In this lesson, we're going to need a word, as we're going to cover "How do you say [something] in Turkish?" So, let's get started right away! |
The Turkish people are famous for their bread. So, let's assume that you want to buy some, but have no idea what to call it in Turkish! What do you do now? Of course, you ask with Survival Phrases! |
In Turkish, "How do you say 'bread' in Turkish?" is Türkçe'de "bread" nasıl denir? Let's break it down: Türk-çe-'de "bread" na-sıl de-nir? Once more, Türkçe'de "bread" nasıl denir? |
The first word, Türkçe'de, means, "in Turkish." Türk-çe-'de. Türkçe'de. This is followed by Nasıl, "how." Na-sıl. Nasıl; after the word that you want to ask the meaning. Next, we have Denir which means "would say." De-nir. Denir. |
All together, we have Türkçe'de "bread" nasıl denir? Literally, this means, "How is said bread in Turkish?" |
Not to leave you hanging, "bread" in Turkish is Ekmek. |
You can also use this expression without using any English. To accomplish this, you can use the expression "How do you say 'this' in Turkish?" In Turkish, "this" is Bu. Bu. Bu. |
So, in Turkish, "How do you say 'this' in Turkish?" is Türkçe'de bu nasıl denir? Let’s break it down: Türk-çe-'de bu na-sıl de-nir? Once again, Türkçe'de bu nasıl denir? |
The structure is exactly same as the previous sentence, except that in place of "bread," we have the demonstrative adjective Bu. |
All together, we have Türk-çe-'de bu na-sıl de-nir? Türkçe'de bu nasıl denir? |
This is a phrase you can use while pointing at something. |
Simply substitute the word Bu with Su, "that" to ask, "How do you say 'that' in Turkish?" Su. Su. You will have Türkçe'de şu nasıl denir? Let's break it down: Türk-çe-'de şu na-sıl de-nir? Once more, Türkçe'de şu nasıl denir? |
But wait, it's your Turkish friend's birthday and you want to wish him/her a happy birthday, but you don't know how to say it. Let's try to ask, Türkçe'de 'happy birthday' nasıl denir? |
"How do you say 'happy birthday' in Turkish?" Türkçe'de 'happy birthday' nasıl denir? |
The first word is Türkçe'de, "in Turkish." Then you have 'happy birthday,' the phrase you want to ask, and Nasıl follows that phrase which means "how." Na-sıl. Nasıl. Finally, we have Denir which means "would say." De-nir. Denir. |
All together, Türkçe'de 'happy birthday' nasıl denir? |
"Happy birthday," by the way, is Mutlu yıllar. |

HideHi listeners! Are you getting comfortable pronouncing Turkish words? Do you get stuck sometimes?
Hi Sam
Except for some loan words from other languages, Turkish "e"s are all pronounced the same way.
Cheers,

Hello ,
my only problem is the letter "e" , it is pronounced in two different ways ,
sometimes in the same word like "öğretmen"
is there a rule ?
thank you very much 👍
Merhaba Hamed,
Turkish doesn't use any throat sounds like French so you can get there easily with more practice. Try to say "Ö" in front of a mirror. Your lips should be slightly open in a narrow elliptic shape. Your tongue should be a little folded from both sides and it should be relaxed and situated right above your back teeth. Hope this explanation helps.
Bol bol pratik lazım! (a lot of practice is needed)

Merhaba Basil,
Language acquisition takes a lot of time and effort and making errors and learning through them is the best way to develop your skills. No worries! You are doing a great job!
Your first answer is correct!
Let's go over your second one,
İngilizce'de "lezzetli yemek" nasıl denir? (Here our noun phrase doesn't need a suffix)
Başarılar!

I think my pronunciation is decent, but I make some errors. I'm approaching the pronunciation of native speakers according to some Turks. I can't really judge. I can only say I sound better.
Türkçe’de “What a lovely day!“ nasıl denir?
İngilizce’de “Lezzetli yemeği“ nasıl denir?
Doğru mu yada yanlıs mı?
