| In the previous lesson, we covered how to buy a train ticket. Once you've confirmed your destination, it's time to select the type of a seat you want. |
| Normally in Turkey, you can choose between Birinci sınıf, "first class," and Ikinci sınıf, "second class." |
| Let's break those down: Bi-rin-ci sı-nıf. Birinci sınıf. And, I-kin-ci sı-nıf. Ikinci sınıf. |
| Birinci means "first." Bi-rin-ci. Birinci. You can hear Bir for "one" inside it, right? And Sınıf is "class." Sı-nıf. Sınıf. |
| In the second phrase, Ikinci means "second." I-kin-ci. Ikinci. You heard Iki for "two" in there, I hope! |
| Once again, those are Birinci sınıf and Ikinci sınıf. |
| Imagine you want to buy a first-class ticket. The destination this time will be Izmir. "A first-class ticket to İzmir, please" in Turkish is İzmir'e birinci sınıf bilet, lütfen. Let's break that down: İz-mi-r'e bi-rin-ci sı-nıf bi-let, lüt-fen. And once again, İzmir'e birinci sınıf bilet, lütfen. |
| We saw this structure in the previous lesson. All we've done this time is customize the ticket with Birinci sınıf, "first-class." |
| If you want to buy a second-class ticket, you just change Birinci, "first" to Ikinci, "second." İzmir'e ikinci sınıf bilet, lütfen. İz-mi-r'e i-kin-ci -ci sı-nıf bi-let, lüt-fen. İzmir'e ikinci sınıf bilet, lütfen. |
| In Turkey, some long-distance trains offer a bed option. These tickets cost a bit more than regular ones. But, if you'd like to have a good sleep on the way to your destination, you should get one of them. |
| The sentence for this is İzmir'e bir yataklı tren bileti lütfen. "A sleeper ticket to Izmir, please." |
| Yataklı means "with bed." Ya-tak-lı. Yataklı. Tren, of course, is train in English. Tren. Tren. Bileti is a "ticket." Bi-le-ti. Bileti. Altogether, these words refer to a ticket for a sleeper car. |
| Let's hear the whole sentence again. İz-mi-r'e bir ya-tak-lı tren bi-le-ti lüt-fen. İzmir'e bir yataklı tren bileti lütfen. |

The noun 'ticket' is 'bilet' in Turkish. 'Bileti' has '-i' suffix attached to it. Depending on the usage, this '-i' suffix could be
* possessive singular third person suffix
-in indefinite compund nouns (otobüs bileti)
-definite compund nouns (trenin bileti)
*object condition (Bileti aldın mı? (Did you buy the ticket?)

Hi Basil,
Language is like a living and rapidly changing organism. Actually in contemporary Turkish, both spellings are acceptable and fine. However, if one wants to be orthodox about it, the spelling with the double "f" would be more appropriate.

I noticed that in the expanded list Affedersiniz is only spelled with one "f".
I just thought I would point it out. Isn't it with two of them?
