Chigusa: Alright, let’s talk about the language learning hacks.
Peter: Well, first, listeners, there are 3 things you should keep in mind… whenever you hear about language learning hacks and tricks.
Chigusa: First, these tips are meant to improve and optimize your learning progress…
Peter: But they can’t replace a strong learning routine…
Chigusa: So you should have that first.
Peter: Exactly. You should already be learning the language with our recommended learning pathway… otherwise, it’s like learning how to improve your workouts…
Chigusa: … when you don’t actually work out.
Peter: Second, if you just listen but don’t take action on any of these tips, you won’t get any results.
Chigusa: And third, you should apply these tips consistently to see results. Just pick one. You don’t have to do them all.
Peter: Okay, with that said, Chigusa, the first one on our list is…?
Chigusa: Number one: Immerse yourself with native conversations.
Peter: So, if you want to listen to conversations in your target language… and immerse yourself in the language… you can do that with the dialogue tracks.
Chigusa: You’ll find the dialogue tracks in every audio lesson… and these give you just the conversation from the lesson - no translations.
Peter: So, after you’re done with a few lessons, download the tracks, make a playlist on your device… and play the conversations on repeat for immersion and review. Or, you can play them out loud in the background when you’re at home.
Chigusa: Number two: Listen and read along with the lesson transcript.
Peter: It can be hard to listen to native speakers speak at their natural pace…
Chigusa: So if you want to understand the language at native speed… and build up your listening skills to that level…
Peter: … then read along with the lesson transcript. This feature is free and available on every lesson page.
Chigusa: So, as you’re taking a lesson and listening to a dialogue, read along.
Peter: This will improve your listening and reading skills and help you learn faster since you’re engaging multiple skills at once.
Chigusa: Number three: Take the assessments inside of the recommended pathway
Peter: The assessments test you on what you’ve learned, and honestly, these should already be part of your main routine. Because testing yourself often is one of the best ways to improve fast… and it almost feels like a hack in a way, which is why we are mentioning it here.
Chigusa: And it’s kind of ironic, Peter. In school, we’re kind of raised to learn FOR the test… but we never use the test as a way to learn and improve.
Peter: Well said, Chigusa. But actually I had a friend, he would take the test and when he didn't do well, he would take the test home and re-do the test, so there are some ways you can really do this… helping assessments, assessments really helping you to learn.
Chigusa: Number four: Shadow the conversations
Peter: Shadowing is simply when you repeat what you hear out loud… and it’s an easy way to practice speaking.
Chigusa: So, as you’re listening to a conversation, shadow along.
Peter: And if it’s too fast, use the transcript…
Chigusa: ..or the Line-by-Line dialogue, which breaks down the conversation into individual lines…
Peter: …and shadow along one line at a time.
Chigusa: Okay, Number five: Create Printable vocabulary sheets with the WordBank
Peter: Think of the word bank as kind of your extended brain. Anytime you come across new words that you want to review later, save them to the word bank.
Chigusa: And inside the word bank, you can click on the Printer Friendly Version option… print the words… and use the sheets as physical study sheets.
Peter: So, this hack is more so for learners that prefer physical material… where you can have it in your notebook, read through, AND also practice writing out the words and phrases.
Chigusa: Number six: Put your lessons on Autoplay
Peter: Now, if you want to listen to our lessons on autoplay… while you’re driving or walking somewhere… then you can do just that with our app.
Chigusa: When you play a lesson inside the audio player, you’ll see an option for Autoplay, so just turn that on.
Peter: This is good for when you want to learn passively… expose yourself to more of the target language… and get familiar with upcoming lessons.
Chigusa: But remember, you should always come back and give these lessons your full attention later… so that you can grasp the language better.
Peter: Number seven: Review words in 3 different ways with the Spaced Repetition Flashcards
Chigusa: Inside the Flashcard settings, you can pick… Listening Comprehension… where you hear the word or phrase in the target language first… to see if you know it.
Peter: Production, where you get the translation first, and you have to produce it in the target language…
Chigusa: …or Recognition, where you get the word written in the target language… to see if you know the meaning.
Peter: You can use 1 , 2, or all 3 ways…
Chigusa: …and reviewing the words in different ways helps you retain them better.
Peter: Again, you’re engaging multiple skills and senses at once, which helps the words stick.
Chigusa: So listeners, pick one or two of these hacks…
Peter: And put them to use.
Chigusa: Remember, the more you stick with it, the better results you’ll get.
Peter: And remember:
