Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last lesson we learned the phrase Bu kaç para? How much is this? In this lesson let’s see how we could answer that question by counting liras in Turkish. In Turkey the currency is the LİRA.
Please pay attention to this word's pronunciation.
LİRA.
Let’s try to say prices in Turkish. Start by trying to say "26 Lira and 56 cents."
Yirmi altı lira ve elli altı kuruş.
[slowly] Yirmi altı lira ve elli altı kuruş.
The word for cent in Turkish is kuruş
[slowly] kuruş
This is really straightforward. First, we say the number of Liras, then lira, then ve, the number of cents, and finally kuruş.
Let’s try another example:
"34 liras and 60 cents."
Otuz dört lira ve altmış kuruş.
[slowly] Otuz dört lira ve altmış kuruş.
Get ready for the next example. This one’s longer:
"99 Liras and 99 cents."
Doksan dokuz lira ve doksan dokuz kuruş
[slowly] Doksan dokuz lira ve doksan dokuz kuruş
That takes a lot of effort to say, doesn’t it! You can shorten it in two ways. First, you don’t need to say “ve”. You also don’t have to say kuruş.
Doksan dokuz nokta doksan dokuz lira
99 point 99 liras
But for the usual way to talk about monetary amounts, remember that before the ve you always have the Liras and after the ve you have the kuruş.
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights.
The lira has been the Turkeys currency since 1926 which is few years after The Republic of Turkey has been established. Before that Turkey was using the Ottoman lira as the official currency.
