Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last lesson we learned how to count in Turkish. I hope you spent some time practicing the numbers, because they will come in handy today. We’re going to learn how to go shopping in Turkey!
Before we go, you need to know how to say “How much is it?”
Bu kaç para?
[slowly] Bu kaç para?
Are you ready to go shopping in Turkey? Let’s go!
You see something you like and want to ask the shopkeeper how much it costs. The first thing to say to a shopkeeper is…Afedersiniz, do you remember what that means? "Excuse me!"
Afedersiniz, bu kaç para?
[slowly] Afedersiniz, bu kaç para?
If we want to be more specific when asking "how much is this?" you can either point out the object or show it. If you are holding the item you probably should use this- bu.
Afedersiniz, bu kaç para?
However if you are pointing out the item that would be more suitable.
Afedersiniz, şu kaç para?
At this point the shopkeeper can answer by saying:
Bu…
Şu …
or O…
For example:
Bu yirmi bir lira!
Şu yirmi bir lira !
or
O yirmi bir lira!
What number is yirmi bir ? I’m not telling you! Okay, okay, it’s "twenty one"! "It costs twenty one liras."
Now it’s time for Zehra Insights.
A quicker way to ask “How much?” is Ne kadar? Which literally means “How much?” For example, Bir ekspreso, ne kadar? “One espresso, how much?”
