| In the last lesson, we learned how to ask "When" questions in Turkish. |
| This time, we are going to ask "Who" questions. |
| Imagine you want to ask your friend who the beautiful girl just behind him is. |
| Here, the question you can ask is Arkandaki güzel kız kim? |
| So let’s break down this question. |
| First we had- |
| Arkandaki, which is the basic translation of |
| "behind you." |
| Güzel is an adjective for “beautiful”, we learned it in previous lessons, |
| Kız means “girl”, so when you say güzel kız, it means “beautiful girl”. But you can replace güzel with any adjective you want. |
| And finally, Kim is "Who" in Turkish. |
| All together it is Arkandaki güzel kız kim? |
| So in Turkish, "Who" is mainly translated as kim . |
| For example, if you want to ask "Who are these people?" You will say Bu insanlar kim? |
| Kim can also be used to ask who did something. |
| If you are in a museum for instance, you can ask Bu tabloyu kim yaptı? This means "Who painted this painting?" |
| Another phrase with Kim that is used a lot is Kimin? In this case, the meaning is "Whose". |
| So if you want to ask "Whose pencil is this?" you will have to say Bu kalem kimin? |
| If we break down this question, it is- |
| Bu kalem, which means "this pencil." |
| we also have Kimin, which is "whose". |
| You can also use the word kim to ask "for which person is it?" In Turkish, we use Kimin için? |
| So if you want to know "For whom is this piece of cake?" It will be Bu kek kimin için? |
| Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights. |
| If someone that you didn't expect is knocking at your door in Turkey, the common question you can ask is Kim o? before opening the door. |
| This literally means "Who is it?" in a really polite way. |
| Before ending this lesson, let’s go back and look at all the ways to translate "who" in Turkish: |
| - Kim is the basic "Who" as in “who is that beautiful girl behind you?” Arkandaki bu güzel kız kim? |
| - Kimin is the equivalent of "Whose", as in "Whose pencil is it?" which is Bu kalem kimin? |
| - Kimin için, is the direct translation of "For whom?" As in "For whom is this piece of cake?" which is Bu kek kimin için? |
| In this lesson, we learned how to correctly use the word for "Who" which is Kim in Turkish, but also its variations. |
