Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb sevmek.
In this lesson, we will learn how to use gelmek, the fourth verb in our series dedicated to the most common Turkish verbs.
gelmek means "to come" in Turkish, and we use it a lot! So come on!
Imagine a friend of yours is organizing a road trip and he asks you – Bizimle geliyor musun? This means "Are you coming with us?"
So supposing you want to go, you will say, Evet sizinle geliyorum! That means "Yes I’m coming with you!"
So let’s break down this answer-
First we had -
Evet which is simply "Yes."
Then sizinle, which means “with you”.
As you may remember siz is “you” in Turkish. if you say sizinle it actually means “with you”.
Grammatically, this one Turkish word is actually formed from two separate words
Siz plus ile
İle represents ”with” but Turkish people tend to join the words together while they are speaking. Although both usages are correct, you will generally hear sizinle instead of siz ile.
After that we have geliyorum, which is the 1st person form of the verb gelmek in present indicative tense.
So, all together it is Sizinle geliyorum.
Gelmek is also often used to suggest an invitation to someone. If you are organizing a party, for example, you can invite your guests by asking them Partime geliyor musunuz? That is "are you coming to my party?"
To answer this question, you can add something after this verb, as in
Evet birkaç arkadaşla geliyorum.
Here you said "Yes, I am coming with some friends."
In this sentence you can also use ile instead of la after arkadaş. That will sound like-
Evet birkaç arkadaş ile geliyorum.
The verb gelmek is also often used as an order or as motivational advice, as in Benimle gel "Come with me!" Or
Hadi! Koşmaya gel! That is, "Come on! Come for a jog, "
In Turkish, we have another very useful phrase that can be used to say "to come back" or "to come again". This verb is geri gelmek. You just add geri to the beginning of gelmek,
For example, if you want to say "I'll come back tomorrow", it is just yarın geri geleceğim
(slowly) yarın geri geleceğim
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights.
We can use the verb gelmek as in English to say "Come in!"
Just say Gel
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb gelmek.
So now, our lesson series about common Turkish verbs is over, and from the next lesson, we will jump into some very important question words!
I'll be waiting for you in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson.
Görüşmek üzere!
