Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In our previous lesson, we learned how to use the verbs yaşındayım and var. In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to turn sentences into their negative forms.
In Turkish in order to make verbs negative we add the -me or -ma suffix at the end of them. Here are some examples.
“Come” - Gel
“Don’t come” - Gelme
“Eat” - Ye
“Don’t eat” - Yeme
“Sit” - Otur
“Don’t sit” - Oturma
So, in order to make a word negative, we usually add a suffix - either -me or -ma. Which one to use depends on the word it is being added to. Let’s have a quick look at this rule.
In order to create vowel harmony, the vowel suffixes take different forms.
If the word’s last vowel is ‘a’, ‘ı’, ‘o’ or ‘u’ we use the -ma suffix
If the word’s last vowel is ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘ö’ or ‘ü’ we use the -me suffix
So let's take a look at some examples to make it clear.
Gel (the positive form) means “come” and its last vowel is ‘e’ so we need to use -me to make it negative.
Gelme
Bugün gelme, meşgulum.
“Do not come today, I am busy.”
Giy means “put on” and the last vowel is ‘i’) so we need to use -me to make it negative
Giyme
O elbiseyi giyme.
“Do not wear that dress.”
Otur means “sit” and the last vowel is ‘u’) so we need to use -ma to make it negative
Oraya oturma.
“Do not sit there.”
Yaz means “write” (the last vowel is ‘a’) so we need to use -ma to make it negative
O kalemle yazma
“Do not write with that pen.”
In Turkish “to have” has a special rule to make it negative. As we learned from the last lesson, saying “I have a pen” is
Bir kalemim var.
If we want to make this sentence “I do not have a pen,” we need to replace the ‘var’ with ‘yok’. So the negative form of “I have a pen” is
Bir kalemim yok
(slow)Bir kalemim yok
“I do not have a pen.”
Another special rule for negative forms applies for adverbs.
Lets say you want to say “I am ready” which is ‘Ben hazırım’ in Turkish.
If you want to say “I am not ready” all you need to do is add ‘değilim’ at the end.
‘Ben hazır değilim’
Here are some examples-
(“I am tall”)-----------Ben uzunum.
(“I am not tall”)-----Ben uzun değilim.
(“I am hungry”)-----------Ben açım.
(“I am not hungry”)-----Ben aç değilim.
Now it’s time for Zehra’s tips.
If you want to be more polite when you are using the negative form, it is nice to add “please” either at the beginning or the end of the sentence. I’m sure no one want to sound like they are giving orders, so it is nice to say, for example,
“Please do not it eat”, which is
Lütfen onu yeme
instead of saying just “do not eat it”, which is
Onu yeme.
Get ready for the next lesson because we are going to study a really important part of the Turkish language: using adjectives.
I’ll be waiting for you in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson.
Görüşmek üzere!
