Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last two lessons, we learned the main usages of the suffix -de, which means “to be at” in Turkish.
In this lesson, we are going to learn to talk about your age.
It’s normal for young people in Turkey to ask each other’s age. Of course, it might be risky to ask it to people over 25!
If someone asks you Kaç yaşındasın? just know that it means “How old are you?” in formal Turkish.
[slowly] Kaç yaşındasın?
In informal Turkish, it would be: Kaç yaşındasınız?
[slowly] Kaç yaşındasınız?
Or you can use the reverse version, “what is your age?” which is
Yaşınız kaç?
[slowly] Yaşınız kaç?
Yaşınız means “your age” and kaç means “what?”
Now you have to answer with your age!
Here are some examples.
“I am 18” - On sekiz yaşındayım.
“I am 20” - Yirmi yaşındayım.
“I am 25” - Yirmi beş yaşındayım.
“I am 40” - Kırk yaşındayım.
Can you see what is happening here? We start with sentence On sekiz yaşındayım, “I am 18”
All you need to do here is put your age at the beginning and say yaşındayım’ afterward. As you may remember from the previous lesson, the -da suffix is used for “at”. And that gives the meaning “at my age”.
[slowly] On sekiz yaşındayım.
Sometimes young Turkish people won’t ask your age directly, but instead, will ask your birth year.
You might hear this question in an informal situation:
Kaçlısın?
[slowly] Kaçlısın?
This literally means “Of which year are you?”
You just have to answer using the last twp figures of your birth year:
Seksen yediliyim which literally means “I am of 87.”
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights.
Were you born in the year 2000? I’m sorry, you can’t say that you are of zero-zero. You have to say the entire year. This would be İki bin doğumluyum.
In this lesson, we learned how to talk about your age and birthdate using yaşındasın. Next time, we’ll learn how to use this verb for talking about possessions.
I'll be waiting for you in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson.
Görüşürüz!
