Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about your nationality. In this lesson, we will learn how to say things like "I am in the street" or "He is in the room".
When you want to know where something or someone is, you use the -da or -de suffix by adding it to the end of the "to be" verb.
For example, when someone asks you on the phone Neredesin? That means "Where are you?" in an informal way.
Let's break it down.
Nere means "Where"
We can make this into “where at”, by adding -de after nere.
Nerede?
If you do not add the suffix -sin to the end of nerede, it will not be clear what you are referring to. As it is, it simply means “where is it?”
Adding the suffix -sin, it becomes "Where are you?"
Neredesin?
Answering this question is very easy! You just say Ben, plus the place where you are, -de or -da and finally -yım.
Ben means “I” and
-ım is the verb suffix that makes the sentence first person singular. We add the "y" to make the phrase flow more smoothly.
So for example, you can say Ben evdeyim which is "I am in the house"
[slowly] Ben evdeyim.
Now let’s see a few other possible answers with I:
"I am at the office" would be Ben ofisteyim.
"I am in a meeting" would be Ben toplantıdayım.
"I am in a store" would be Ben mağazadayım.
The -de suffix changes a lot depending on the word it follows. Let’s review a few of the versions we’ve seen so far.
-de - Neredesin? “Where are you?”
-da - Okuldayım. “I am at school.”
-te - İşteyim. “I am at work.”
-ta - Sokaktayım. “I am in the street.”
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights.
You might be wondering *why* the suffix changes.
Turkish pronunciation depends on consistency and harmony, so we adjust the suffix to the word that comes before to make it sound as smooth as possible. For example, İşteyim sounds much more smooth than İşdeyim. If you want to master Turkish, you should learn the rules, but for now just remember the patterns we learned in this lesson.
In this lesson we learned how to talk about your location. Next time, we’ll learn how to talk about your age. I’ll be waiting for you in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson.
