Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about your plans. In this lesson, we will discuss how to talk about your nationality.
When you meet a new person in Turkey, they might ask you Nerelisiniz? which is the equivalent of "Where do you come from?" or ‘Where are you from?’
Although it is one word sentence we can quickly look at it by breaking apart.
Nere means where
nere-li means from where
As you may recall from previous lessons
the -siniz appendix represents the formal way of addressing ‘you’.
All together it's Nerelisiniz?
[slowly] Nerelisiniz?
Answering this question is very easy! You just say Ben, which means "I am", then your nationality.
For example: Ben Amerikalıyım.
[slowly] Ben Amerikalıyım.
Just replace “Amerikalıyım” with your own nationality.
"I am German" is Ben Almanım.
"I am Italian" is Ben İtalyanım.
"I am Brazilian" is Ben Brazilyalıyım.
To return the question you can simply say Ya siz? which is "And you?" in a polite way.
Now it’s time for Zehra’s tips.
Be careful because in Turkish, we do write nationality names with a capital letter like in English! That shows respect to the nationalities while writing.
In this lesson we learned how to talk about nationalities.
