Introduction
Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Turkish Season 1, Lesson 19 - Going Without. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to make essential negative statements in Turkish.
Body
Eric: Here's the informal way to say 'I don't have a pen.' in Turkish.
Icten: [Normal] Kalemim yok.
Eric: First is a word meaning 'My pen'
Icten: [Normal] Kalemim [Slow] Kalemim
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'he doesn't exist, she doesn't exist, it doesn't exist'
Icten: [Normal] yok [Slow] yok
Eric: Listen again to the informal phrase meaning 'I don't have a pen.'
Icten: [Slow] Kalemim yok. [Normal] Kalemim yok.
Eric: Ok, now let’s take a look at the informal way to say 'I don't have time.'
Icten: [Normal] Vaktim yok.
Eric: First is a word meaning 'My time'
Icten: [Normal] Vaktim [Slow] Vaktim
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'he doesn't exist, she doesn't exist, it doesn't exist'
Icten: [Normal] yok [Slow] yok
Eric: Listen again to the informal phrase meaning 'I don't have time.'
Icten: [Slow] Vaktim yok. [Normal] Vaktim yok.
Eric: Next up is the informal way to say 'I don't know.'
Icten: [Normal] Bilmiyorum.
Eric: This expression has only one word meaning 'I don't know'
Icten: [Normal] Bilmiyorum [Slow] Bilmiyorum
Eric: Listen again to the informal word meaning 'I don't know.'
Icten: [Slow] Bilmiyorum. [Normal] Bilmiyorum.
Eric: Finally, here is an informal way to say 'I don't understand.'
Icten: [Normal] Anlamıyorum.
Eric: This expression has only one word meaning 'I don't understand'
Icten: [Normal] Anlamıyorum [Slow] Anlamıyorum
Eric: Listen again to the informal word meaning 'I don't understand.'
Icten: [Slow] Anlamıyorum. [Normal] Anlamıyorum.
Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Icten: If you want to be more polite when using the negative form, it’s nice to add “please” either at the beginning or the end of the sentence. I’m sure nobody wants to sound like they are giving orders, so it’s nice to say, for example,
“Please don’t eat it”, which is
Lütfen onu yeme
instead of saying just “don’t eat it”, which is
Onu yeme.

Outro

Eric: And that’s all for this lesson. Don’t forget to check out the lesson notes, and we’ll see you in the next lesson!
Icten: Hoşçakalın.

Let's practice here! Try translating this statement: 'I don't have it.'

Rehka,

For example:

I don't have a car.

Benim arabam yok.

So you are right!

Hi Letu

Not quite correct. You want to give it another go? Putting an object in place of "it" might be easier.

Cheers,
