Ayasofya

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is located in Turkey in the city of Istanbul. In its history, the building has been an Orthodox basilica, a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a mosque. The building was first dedicated in 360 AD, and in those days, it was Constantinople's Greek Patriarchal cathedral. It became a cathedral for Roman Catholics for about 60 years in the 1200s, but it was changed back to an Orthodox church after that until 1453 when it was converted to a mosque. In 1931 it became a secular building, and then four years later it was turned into a museum.
Some experts hail the structure as the epitome of architectural work from Byzantine times, and the dome is one of the most famous views from Istanbul. For almost a thousand years, it was the world's largest cathedral.
In addition to the dome, Hagia Sophia is also known for the numerous holy relics and mosaics. An incredible iconostasis greets visitors to the museum, and the building is also home to two lustration urns that came from Pergamon. Other impressive features inside the structure include the Marble Door and numerous mosaics depicting Jesus, Mary, and various saints and rulers. Many mosaics were revealed during a restoration of the building done in the 1930s when some of the plaster was removed. The restoration process was especially interesting because of the building's history as both a Christian and Muslim place of worship. This resulted in the display of iconic works of art from both faiths, which contradict each other.

Republic Day

Republic Day in Turkey is celebrated on October 29th and marked by parades and performances throughout the country. There are many local, as well as national festivals that commemorate the Independence of Turkey—which was spurred by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Processions flanked by flags and musical bands are the most common evidence of Turkey celebrating the founding of its sovereign country.

There are performances held in open stadiums where the theater sketches, poetry readings and traditional dances are exhibited for the attendees' enjoyment. Local elementary schools have programs performed by students for parents that celebrate Republic Day. With local parades around the country and government officials giving speeches, the country is full of festivals at all levels of constituents and citizens. Many of the local celebrations are finalized by setting off great displays of fireworks.

Most government buildings are closed on Republic Day in Turkey. As a national holiday, government officials and employees enjoy the day with their families or by representing their constituents at a local parade or ceremony. This day marks the day that the new Turkish state was established as a Republic in 1923, and is met with all the pomp and circumstance that is expected for a day that recognizes it. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish Republic's founder, was named the country's first President on this same day, marking a true change from the old to the new. As the leader of the Turkish War of Independence, it was fitting that he was named as the leader of the new country at this time.
