Lesson focus

Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 30: "Where can I find this place?" in Turkish.
In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask where things are. In this lesson, we will introduce you to another useful phrase for finding the place you need. This lesson's phrase is "Is there a (place) near here?"
First, we need a place. Let's use the word Eczane, which means "pharmacy." Ec-za-ne. Eczane.
In Turkish, "Is there a pharmacy near here?" is Buralarda bir eczane var mı? Let's break it down: Bu-ra-lar-da bir ec-za-ne var mı? And once again, Buralarda bir eczane var mı?
The first word, Buralarda, means "around here." Bu-ra-lar-da. Buralarda. Next comes Bir eczane, "a pharmacy." After that comes Var, which in this sentence means "there is." Var. Var. And, this is a question, so of course, we have Mı at the end. Mı. Mı.
All together, it's Buralarda bir eczane var mı?
Instead of Buralarda, "near here," you can also say Yakınlarda, "nearby." Ya-kın-lar-da. Yakınlarda. Yakınlarda bir eczane var mı?
"Is there a pharmacy nearby?" Ya-kın-lar-da bir ec-za-ne var mı? Yakınlarda bir eczane var mı?
To ask for a different place, we can replace the word Eczane with any other word, and the phrase works just fine.
Imagine that you need to withdraw some money from your bank account.
In Turkish, "Is there an ATM near here?" is Buralarda bir bankamatik var mı?
The only thing that changes is the thing you are looking for. In this case, Bankamatik. The first part of the word, Banka, means "bank," and Matik means "automatic machine." Ban-ka-ma-tik. Bankamatik.
So, all together we have, Bu-ra-lar-da bir ban-ka-ma-tik var mı? Buralarda bir bankamatik var mı?

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we would you to practice what you have just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So, Iyi şanslar, which means "good luck" in Turkish.
