Lesson focus

Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 21: Using the internet in Turkey.
In this lesson, we'll learn about a place crucial to your travels in this modern age: the internet café! Normally, you find internet cafés in the big main cities. These days, it is very hard to find areas without internet in Turkey. The minimum level of service is a common computer near the front desk. In hotels or cafés, Wi-Fi is usually part of the service. But, if you don't carry your laptop around, this lesson is definitely for you.
Imagine you're at the reception counter and want to ask how much the connection costs for how long. Afedersiniz, bir saati ne kadar? Let's break it down: A-fe-der-si-niz, bir sa-a-ti ne ka-dar? And, once more, Afedersiniz, bir saati ne kadar?
Afedersiniz is "Excuse me." Bir is "one," of course. Saat means "hour." So, Bir saati here means something like "for one hour." And Ne kadar is still "how much."
So, the whole sentence is "Excuse me. How much for one hour?" Afedersiniz, bir saati ne kadar?
The answer will probably sound something like this: Bir saati iki lira. "One hour is two liras."
But, it is also quite common for cafés to charge in 30-minute blocks. So, you may hear Yarım saati bir lira. Ya-rım sa-a-ti bir li-ra. Yarım saati bir lira.
Yarim means "half." So, this sentence means, "Half an hour is one lira." Yarım saati bir lira.
If you're still a little shaky on Turkish numbers, you can review those lessons anytime.

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we would you to practice what you have just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So, Iyi şanslar, which means "good luck" in Turkish.
