Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 20: Turkish money, an introduction.
Turkey's currency is the lira. At the time of writing, the exchange rate is roughly 2 lira to 1 USD. Denominations include coins for 5, 10, 25, 50 kuruş and 1 lira; and bills for 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 liras.
Let's say some prices in Turkish. It won't be too difficult. Let's start with 12 lira. On iki lira. On i-ki li-ra. On iki lira.
If you go up to hundreds or thousands, things don't get much more complicated. We've already learned that a hundred in Turkish is Yüz. So, 230 is iki yüz otuz. I-ki yüz o-tuz. Iki yüz otuz.
When you go above 100, the noun Yüz stays in the same form. Yüz. So, 200 is iki yüz, 300 is üç yüz, and so on.
A thousand in Turkish is Bin. Bin. Bin.
For 2,000 or more of something, the noun bin stays in the same form. So, 2,000 would be Iki bin.
Now, for a slightly more complicated number, 5,320. Beş bin üç yüz yirmi. Let's break it down: Beş bin üç yüz yir-mi. Once more, Beş bin üç yüz yirmi.
Since Turkish prices come not only in whole liras but also in cents, such as 1 lira and 35 cents, we will need to learn how to say those, too. Cents in Turkish are called Kuruş.
In Turkish 1 lira and 35 kuruş is Bir lira otuz beş kuruş. Bir li-ra o-tuz beş ku-ruş. Bir lira otuz beş kuruş.
Even if there's more than one whole lira in the price, the noun lira stays in the same form. Lira.
