Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 1: How to say "Thank you" in Turkish. |
Hello! Merhaba! My name is Sarah, and I will be your language teacher and culture guide throughout this introductory course. |

Wherever your destination may be, manners are a must! Turkey is no different. So, in our very first lesson, we'll be teaching you a simple phrase that is bound to come in handy throughout your trip to Turkey. I can't stress this enough: A little a bit of language can go a long way! |
In Turkish, "Thank you" is Teşekkür ederim. |
Let's break this down. Te-sek-kür e-de-rim. Once more, Teşekkür ederim. |
The first word, Teşekkür, means "thankfulness." Te-şek-kür. Teşekkür . After this comes Ederim, meaning "to give." E-de-rim. |
All together, that's Teşekkür ederim. Teşekkür ederim. |
You can emphasize Teşekkür ederim by adding Çok, which means literally "a lot" or "so much." Çok. |
You could say Çok teşekkür ederim, which would be equivalent to "Thank you so much," a politer expression than just Teşekkür ederim. |
Let's break that down. Çok te-şek-kür e-de-rim. Once more, Çok teşekkür ederim. |
In Turkish, there are other ways to express one's gratitude but they are all variations of Teşekkür ederim. |
There will be occasions where you will really want to show your appreciation and politeness. On these occasions, you should use the expression Teşekkür ederim. However, in daily life, people use Teşekkürler, which is simply another form of the noun Teşekkür. |
So, "Thanks" in Turkish is Teşekkürler. |
And "Many thanks" is Çok teşekkürler. |
Let's break it down. Çok te-şek-kür-ler. Once more, Çok teşekkürler. |
The first word, Çok, "a lot", is used to make the phrase more polite. This is followed by Teşekkürler, which means something like "thanks." Teşekkürler. Teşekkürler. Çok teşekkürler. Çok teşekkürler. |

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we would you to practice what you have just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So, Iyi şanslar, which means "good luck" in Turkish. |
"Thank you" - Teşekkür ederim. |
Te-şek-kür e-de-rim. |
Teşekkür ederim. |
"Thank you so much." - Çok teşekkür ederim. |
Çok te-şek-kür e-de-rim. |
Çok teşekkür ederim. |
"Many thanks." - Çok teşekkürler. |
Çok te-şek-kür-ler. |
Çok teşekkürler. |

Hi Ali,
Thank you for your message!
As you mentioned our Quiz section is an automatic system, thus very sensitive.
If you don't use the exact words as the ones you find in the vocab section, it will mark the entry wrong, even if you miss adding the punctuation.
Our team is working on a better system. Thank you for your patience in the meantime.
Have a great day!
Cheers,
Ali
