INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to TurkishClass101.com. This is Lower Beginner Season 1 Lesson 25 - Finding Your Way Around a Turkish City. Becky here.
Feyza: Merhaba. I'm Feyza.
Becky: In this final lesson of the series, you’ll learn key phrases for giving directions. This conversation takes place outside on the street.
Feyza: It’s between Hakan and a passerby.
Becky: The speakers don't know each other, so they start the dialogue using formal language, but for simplicity’s sake it’s easier to give directions informally, so that's why they switch to informal language. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Hakan: Affedersiniz, tren istasyonu nerede?
Adam: Yakın.Sola dön, iki sokak sonra sağa dön. Bankanın yanında.
Hakan: Tamam. buradan sola dön, iki sokak sonra sağa dön. Anladım. Teşekkürler!
Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Hakan: Affedersiniz, tren istasyonu nerede?
Adam: Yakın.Sola dön, iki sokak sonra sağa dön. Bankanın yanında.
Hakan: Tamam. buradan sola dön, iki sokak sonra sağa dön. Anladım. Teşekkürler!
Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation
Hakan: Excuse me. Where is the train station?
Passerby: It’s close. Turn left here, then in two streets, turn right. It’s next to the bank.
Hakan: Ok, Turn left here, then in two streets, turn right. Got it. Thank you!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Asking for directions is very natural in Turkey.
Feyza: Yes, but you should be careful, because many Turkish people will want to help you even when they don’t really know the way. You might even end up lost if you try to follow their directions!
Becky: Wow, I guess GPS is the safest method. Keep in mind that in Turkey streets have names, not numbers. Apartments have names and numbers as well.
Feyza: Once my mom and uncle were driving to Tuzla, a suburb of Istanbul, to run an errand. The GPS had technical problems, so they had to ask their way from the people on the street. Eventually they ended up lost for two hours while following those peoples’ directions!
Becky: One hint we can give you is to ask cab drivers, because it’s their job to know directions very well. Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Feyza: İstasyon
Becky: meaning "station." It’s a loanword from French and you can use it for bus stops or train stations.
Feyza:. Train station in Turkish is tren istasyonu. A bus terminal is called otobüs garı in Turkish. A bus stop is otobüs durağı or simply, durak. İskele means “pier,” as in Kadıköy İskelesi meaning “Kadıköy Pier.” A tollgate is called gişe in Turkish.
Becky: Remembering these words will make commuting easier for you in Turkey. Can you give us an example?
Feyza: Sure. For example, you can say.. Pardon, Erenköy tren istasyonu nerede acaba?
Becky:...which means “Pardon me, where is Erenköy station I wonder?”
Feyza: And the answer may be Çiçekçiyi geçince solda.
Becky: Meaning “It's on your left after passing the flower shop." Okay, what’s next?
Feyza: Dönmek
Becky: meaning "to return, to rotate, to turn, to spin, to change back." You often use this word in imperative mood because you use it when giving directions. Let's see some examples.
Feyza: Sağa dön.
Becky: “Turn right.”
Feyza: Sola dön.
Becky: “Turn left.”
Feyza: Dönmek can also be used for returning to something, as in Eski işime geri döndüm,
Becky: meaning ''I returned to my previous job.'' This verb also describes the action of spinning.
Feyza: For example, Bir dön bakalım, elbiseni görelim,
Becky: meaning “Spin around. Let's see your dress.” Can you give us an example using this word for directions?
Feyza: Sure. For example, you can say.. Okula dönmeye çalışıyorum ama yolu kaybettim.
Becky: which means “I am trying to return to school but I lost my way.”
Feyza: And you may hear "Işıklardan sola dön, 200 metre ileride" in reply.
Becky: Which means “Turn left at the traffic light. It's 200 metres ahead.” Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson you’ll learn how to take and give multi-step directions with these key phrases for giving directions. For example,
Feyza: Yakın. Sola dön, iki sokak sonra sağa dön. Bankanın yanında.
Becky: Which means “It’s close. Turn left here, then in two streets, turn right. It’s next to the bank.” So Feyza, how do we ask for directions in Turkish?
Feyza: It’s the place name plus nerede?
Becky: Meaning “Where is [Place name]?” If you want to be more informal, you can say-
Feyza: Place nerede acaba?
Becky: “Where is [Place name], I wonder...” Let’s hear one more example.
Feyza: Sure! Tuvalet nerede acaba?
Becky: Meaning, “Where is the toilet, I wonder...”
Feyza: Now, imagine you’re asking about the nearest post office. You ask "En yakın postane nerede?".
Becky: …meaning “Where is the nearest post office?”. Here are some examples of answers you may get.
Feyza: Dümdüz yürüyün. Hemen karşınızda.
Becky: “Walk straight. It'll be right in front of you.”
Feyza: Sol kolunuzda.
Becky: “On your left side.”
Feyza: Sağ kolunuzda
Becky: “On your right side.” You might also hear answers like-
Feyza: Karşıya geçin. Dümdüz yürüyün. Sağdan ikinci sokak.
Becky: Which means “Cross the street. Walk straight. It’s on the second street on your right.”
Feyza: Imagine that you are in your car. You stop, lower your window, and ask a passerby, “Can I turn right from here?'' and the reply is "Hayır, orası çıkmaz sokak".
Becky: This means “No, that street is a dead end.” Let’s hear some sample sentences with more directions!
Feyza: En yakın benzin istasyonu nerede?
Becky: "Where is the nearest gas station?"
Feyza: Yokuştan 500 metre sonra anayol var. Alt geçitten geçin. Sağınızda.
Becky: "The main road is 500 metres after the slope. Drive through the underpass. It’s on your right."
Feyza: Arabayla on dakika sürer.
Becky: Which means "It takes about ten minutes by car."
