Merhaba too much! Nasılsınız? Ben Seda. Hoşgeldiniz.Hi everybody I am Seda. Welcome to TurkishClass101.com
Okay, we've been talking about months for a while. I don't remember which month we started but
we've been talking about months and we finished the summer months and we started the autumn
months. We talk about Eylül meaning September and now it's time for to talk about October.
October one of my favorite months. First of all let's learn the word October. October is
Ekim. Ekim. Ekim. Ekim. It's a beautiful word to my ears. But we have a story behind this.
This month it was not always called Ekim. This month was Teşrini Evvel.
Well you are happy that it's changed right? It was longer. Anyway in 1945 a new law was adopted
and the name Teşrini Evvel was changed to Ekim. Ekim means planting and sowing. Why of all the
months in a year this month is called to be the month of planting, sowing? It is because in this
month wheat, the plant that we make the bread, which is a very important food source, is planted.
Okay, that's the time. That's how important wheat season was to people. So they changed the name
and Ekim as a word is also used as a female name, a proper name like Seda. So keep that in mind and
so what's special about Ekim? The universities start their education during this month and other
than that there's not much going on socially and but we have a very important, maybe the most
important national holiday in this month. It is 29 Ekim Cumhuriyet Bayramı. It is the Republic Day.
Republic Day is a national holiday celebrated every year on 29th of October
in the memory of Turkish Grand National Assemblies Declaration of Republic Administration on
29th of October 1923. So it's going to be a little history lesson here so get ready.
It was starting to be celebrated as a national holiday with a law enacted in 1925
and as you may know these lands that we live were Ottoman Empire before, the foundation of Turkish
Republic and the Ottoman Empire was ruled by an absolute monarchy, the Sultan until 1876 and by
the constitutional monarchy between 1876 and 1878 and 1908 and 1918. So the national struggle
led by Mustafa Kemal Paşa against the invaders in Anatolia which was occupied after the defeat
in the First World War resulted in the victory of the national Turkish national forces in 1923
and in this process the representatives of the people gathered in Ankara, today our capital city
back then it was Istanbul and after Republic it's Ankara on April 23, 1920 under the name of
Grand National Assembly, Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi declared that the sovereignty belongs
to the Turkish nation not the Sultan and this with this decision taken on November 1st 1922
had abolished the reign no more Sultan by our Sultan thank God. Anyway the country was governed
by a parliamentary government and after some time Mustafa Kemal Paşa along you know with other
people of course prepared a law amendment draft together they do it together with Ismet İnönü and
other you know representatives to make the government a official republic and present it to the
parliament on October 29th of 1923 and with the adoption of this amendment
made in the law the republic was proclaimed by the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Türkiye
Büyük Millet Meclisi and after that these lands become you know parliamentary democracy and the
republic so this day no matter what happens you know is the most important national holiday so far
so okay I got you know a high level what else is there any literature reference to this month
yeah not much there are two poems that I could find one is from Turgut Uyar a poet I will read
that to you but I will not translate try to translate this try to understand the poetry
because you know when you translate the poetry it sounds really really weird
tavrım bir şeyi bulup coşmaktır
sonbahar geldi hüzün
kış geldi kara hüzün
ey en akıllı kişisi dünyanın
bazen yaz ortasında gündüzün
sevgim acıyor
kimi sevsem
kim beni sevse
eylül toparlandı gitti işte
ekim falan da gider bu gidişle
tarihe gömülen koca koca atlar
tarihe gömülür o kadar
so this was a poetry from the poet Turgut Uyar the words are not that complicated you can use google
translation and check the meaning and try to get into the sounds of the poetry okay
and we have one more from the poet Edip Cansever and here it goes like this
neyse ki biz ekimdik.
bitmezdik resimlerde.
sırasız, dengesiz, yapraksız öyle.
hem vardık, hem de yoktuk.
biz sahi nereliydik...?
so that's it and nothing I'm thinking but there is nothing else special about this month so
let's look at the weather and how is the weather in Ekim it's getting cooler and cooler towards
the end of the month and but since Turkey has different regions and the weather changes a lot
between those regions it can be summer in some place and winter in another place so
it totally depends on the region so let's look at the regions a little closer I will just
come back later we'll just put the you know numbers on the screen so you don't see my face
