Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Turkey Series at TurkishClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Turkish holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 25 - Istanbul International Jazz Festival. In Turkish, it’s called İstanbul Uluslararası Caz Festivali.
In 1994, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts started holding the Istanbul International Jazz Festival. Since then, every year in July not only jazz, which in Turkish is called caz, but also pop and rock concerts among others are hosted in several venues throughout the city.
In this lesson you will learn more about the Istanbul International Jazz Festival, which has earned itself a respectable place within the global jazz community.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
Which world-famous R&B star opened the Istanbul International Jazz Festival in 2013?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
Every year in the first half of July, this versatile festival promotes Turkish artists and their new productions, effectively encouraging new generations to take part in the industry. The Istanbul Jazz Festival provides music lovers, or müzik severler, with a wide range of sub-genres of jazz. The program includes not only classic and modern, but also Latin Jazz and Northern Jazz, as well as extraordinary sounds where different genres meet electronica and jazz.
Thanks to its extraordinary diversity, this festival allows the audience to discover new talents, or yeni yetenekler. Also, by hosting this event in different venues, it carries music out of the concert halls or konser salonları and aims to turn Istanbul into a city of jazz. The festival carries jazz to the historic places, roads and streets of Istanbul – even trams and ferries. In this way, it aims to create new possible event venues and cater for larger crowds. Due to its nature, this festival merges the urban identity of the city with music very efficiently, which has helped greatly in promoting Istanbul as an international tourist destination.
The festival has an interesting history of choosing venues, including historic places such as the Saint Irene Museum, Istanbul Archaeology Museum, and the Esma Sultan Waterside Residence. From 2002 onward, the Istanbul International Jazz Festival included another award called the Lifetime Achievement Award, or Yaşam Boyu Başarı Ödülü, for artists who helped promote and made significant contributions towards jazz music in Turkey and abroad.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Which world-famous R&B star opened the Istanbul International Jazz Festival in 2013?
Alicia Keys, who skyrocketed to the top of the charts with her album Girl on Fire, performed in the festival within the scope of her "Set the World on Fire" tour.
