Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Turkey Series at TurkishClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Turkish holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 24 - Fashion Week Istanbul. In Turkish, it’s called İstanbul Moda Haftası.
Since 2011, Istanbul has played host to Istanbul Fashion Week at the beginning of October. This occasion receives a great deal of attention from Turkish designers, socialites, fashion critics, fashion bloggers, and the media in general.
In this lesson, you will get an idea about modern Turkish fashion and the importance of Fashion Week for the Turkish textile sector, which is trying to catch up to the international fashion world.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
Tabloid favorites England’s Prince William and Kate Middleton ordered certain Turkish fashionable items for their wedding. Do you know what they ordered?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
Along with Turkish sponsors, foreign companies also support the Mercedes Benz Istanbul Fashion Week with financial capital. This fashion event provides local designers with a wide range of international buyers or uluslararası alıcılar and media attention. Also, being a metropolis where eastern and western cultures meet, this event presents Istanbul and Turkish designs as an elite and sophisticated fashion scene to a highly global audience.
A few of the most well known designers include Cengiz Abazoğlu – who also demonstrated his work on Paris Fashion Week’s final catwalk, Arzu Kaprol – who used to be a stylist in the high-end clothing boutique Beymen, and Turkish designer Aslı Filinta – who lives in New York and whose designs are sold in Japan, are some of the famous designers who participate in this event. Photos taken during this event are widely shared on Twitter by both visitors and fashion designers.
Due to a heavy shift in textile demand between 1998 and 2005 towards countries such as China and India, the Turkish textile sector took a major blow. During this period many firms went bankrupt and closed. Even though the Turkish textile sector or Türk tekstil sektörü is the largest in Europe, and Turkey itself is the seventh largest cotton producer in the world, due to branding and promotion issues, it has yet to catch up with global fashion. For that reason, events like Istanbul Fashion Week are very important for branding and finding leads to potential buyers.
Turkish dramas, or Türk dizileri, have an undeniable effect on Turkish fashion. What leading actors or actresses wear in a movie or series instantly becomes popular. By being featured in such dramas, new fashion designers in the process of trying to make it big become acknowledged.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Tabloid favorites, England’s Prince William and Kate Middleton ordered certain Turkish fashionable items for their wedding. Do you know what they ordered?
They ordered towels from the city of Denizli that displayed the Prince and his wife-to-be’s names, along with the date of the wedding within a gold heart.
So listeners, how was this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?
If there is one, which city hosts the fashion week in your country?
