Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone, it’s Selin and welcome to Turkish Weekly Words. Well, as usual, the content of the lesson is a surprise for me. So let’s find out together. Oh, bugs and insects. We use only one word for each of them, which is böcek, or sometimes we use haşere, but it’s not – I think it’s not very common. The common one is böcek and the meaning is exactly the same.
1. arı "bee"
Okay. So, every member of my family got stung from a bee except me. So I am kind of very afraid of bees. I really don’t like bees. Let’s say,
Arılar bal yapar. Which means "Bees produce honey."
I don’t like honey as well.
2. karınca "ant"
When I was a little kid, I used to kill ants. I am sorry. I was such a bad kid. Oh I think in Turkey, I am not sure though but if you have ants in your house, then, it means like you’ll be rich or you’ll be worthy or something like that. So, ants are kind of like good animals for us somehow. And Turkish people believe that ants are very productive. So we say,
Karıncalar çok çalışkandır. Which means "Ants are very productive." Yeah.
3. sivrisinek "mosquito"
I hate these especially in summer time. We have a lot in Turkey. Let’s say,
Yazın Türkiye'de çok sivrisinek olur. Which means "In summertime, there are lots of mosquitoes in Turkey."
And it’s true.
4. hamam böceği "cockroach"
Hamam means bath and böceği means insect, right. So it’s kind of like insects in the bath. These insects are not in just bath, right. I mean, if I am not wrong, but we call it that way. I don’t know why.
Mutfaktan hamam böceği çıktı. Which means, "There was a cockroach in the kitchen."
5. ağustos böceği "cicada"
Ağustos means “August”. So böcek, böceği means “insects”; and because it’s an insect, it usually appears in like summer time. I think that’s why we call it ağustos böceği which means, insect in August.
Ağustos böceği ile karıncanın hikayesini okudunuz mu? "Have you ever read the story of the cicada and ant?"
I don’t know if it’s an universal story. So if it is, just teach me.
That’s all for today. If you want to watch more videos, if you want to learn Turkish more, then, please visit Turkishclass101.com, see you in the next video. Bye-bye!
